Coming home – Packing for baby’s first trip home

Coming home – Packen für Babys erste Reise nach Hause

OK, yes, packing for the baby is a bit of an exaggeration, because first and foremost it is about you and the birth. In addition to the personal things for you (see also blog post (“I’m packing my suitcase” ) you should only take the bare essentials for the baby.

First, a few tips and recommendations:

  • Download packing checklists to tick off.
  • Everything you take with you should have been thoroughly washed, checked and tested beforehand. Whether it is the muslin diaper, the cloth rattle or the car seat. Before the birth, make sure you pack the car seat in the car with the accompanying person, install it correctly and test it out (you can also do this on a cuddly toy)!
  • The motto here is clear: less is more! And if something important is missing, your partner or relative can quickly rush to the nearest shop and get it after the birth.
  • Every clinic is equipped differently. Ask the clinic or birthing center beforehand what is available or what you need to bring with you. There is often information about this on their website. In addition, almost all birthing centers offer an "open day" or similar viewing events.
  • Ask your friends who have given birth in the same way (whether in a hospital, birthing center or at home), and especially ask their partners, what they should bring or collect from the women.
  • Put a post-it or a large piece of paper on the open bag for the missing item (e.g. cell phone charger) so that it can be packed when you set off. Because it can all happen so quickly and get lost in the excitement (don't panic!).

So the question is: What does your baby need in the first days in the world?

What to wear – depending on the season, of course:

  • Wrap body (long or short sleeve)
  • Romper or 2-piece comfortable suit (preferably with feet)
  • Accessories (such as hat, cardigan, socks or gloves in winter, etc.)

Care and hygiene:

  • Muslin nappies , burp cloths and Care wipes
  • Washcloths and/or wet wipes (if not already available)
  • Baby oil (also to clean and care for the bottom)
  • Diaper fleece (and cloth diapers if you don't want to use the existing disposable diapers)

Calm and comfort:

Transport:

  • Blanket or wrap blanket
  • Stroller
  • Baby carrier/car seat

Breast pumps, pre-milk and bottles with teats are available in the clinics for breastfeeding or feeding. If you prefer a particular brand or manufacturer, you should bring your own equipment.

Don't forget your camera and/or your cell phone - the first moments and days after birth are magical and should be captured in pictures. As soon as you look at the picture - even years later - it will bring back the same feelings of happiness as back then, believe me. And what could be better: to reminisce and feel the magical moment of a new beginning again? Ah...
