Useful gifts for birth
As a new mom, back home after a few days, I was honestly completely overwhelmed (if not overburdened) by the congratulations and gifts that arrived.
It was probably the hormones, all the magic of a new beginning, that made me so emotional. Packages arrived almost daily, or visitors announced their arrival, eager to greet our little new arrival. And of course, everyone brought a "little something." I was truly overjoyed by all the unexpected surprises and gifts from everyone. Wow. But the gifts were piling up. I didn't know where to put them all, and then there was the task of sorting them: what did I need right away, what could wait, what needed to be washed before first use, how, where... and why, anyway?
Why are there certain items that are declared and sold or bought as baby products, but are actually not very useful?
But let's start from the beginning. The best thing to do is create a baby wish list for the birth. Whether you use a reputable online service or write it out by hand is entirely up to you and depends on your preferences. Make a note of who gave you which gifts, so you can later include photos of the baby with the gift or mention them personally in thank-you cards. This will not only delight the giver but also be a lovely keepsake for your little one. And that's what this is all about, after all.
• Group gifts – larger purchases such as strollers, car seats, baby carriers or baby monitors, etc., can also be combined.
• Vouchers and subscriptions – drugstore vouchers, baby store vouchers, diaper subscriptions, magazine subscriptions
• Gifts that will be needed long-term or only later (e.g. bibs, spoons, teething rings, etc.)
• Consumables: Care and hygiene products (but be careful: difficult with allergy-prone babies) such as wipes, creams, diapers, etc.
• Household items: muslin diapers, hooded bath towel, brush, washcloth, teething rings, rattle, music box, etc.
• A piggy bank for the children's room, or even a savings account or stock certificate, etc.
• Homemade gifts such as a hand-knitted hat or a crocheted cuddly toy
Baby clothes are a tricky subject, in my opinion. It depends on the quality and personal taste. And then there's the question of whether it's actually needed. Depending on the size of the newborn, whether it's a summer or winter baby, and what's already in the layette, many baby clothes gifts are unfortunately unnecessary and only pretty to look at. This sadly includes those cute, irresistible baby shoes that are available almost everywhere, even from well-known brands – completely unnecessary (and also unhealthy for little baby feet). Socks would be a much better gift, and if they're hand-knitted, it's all the more personal and loving.
Classic diaper cakes are still a great idea, of course. But the diapers should be of high quality and bought in a larger size.
And shhh, the gifts that we really didn't like at all, or that we had no use for, we gave away, donated, or sold after careful consideration. And I was finally able to make peace with that, because we were able to bring joy to someone who apparently really needed it.
After a few weeks and a few washes (of baby clothes, cuddly toys, etc.), I got the hang of it and was able to sort and use the gifts properly. And I actually still remember who gave us what. That makes me happy, because it always reminds me of the magic of the beginning with my baby.
Best regards,
Yours truly, Melissa // 34 years old, simply a mom of a baby boy
Herbal baby pads offer an extremely gentle form of aromatherapy – completely without essential oils or harsh chemicals. They can naturally support babies – helping them fall asleep, soothing mild colds, or simply providing a feeling of security.
Parents should always observe their baby's individual reactions and consult a midwife or pediatrician if they have any concerns. Even with natural substances, what is beneficial for one baby may be too much for another.
