Dressing your baby properly in winter: How to keep your newborn warm

The cold season is just around the corner. We're all looking forward to long winter walks and fun winter sports trips. What's the worst thing you can do? Cold hands and feet! Your little darling in the stroller might also be more comfortable with a small heating pad, but normal heating pads and hot water bottles get cold easily outside.

No problem: There are also a few helpful products that will keep you warm when you're out and about. In the following blog post, we'll give you some tips on how you can keep yourself and your baby nice and warm in winter.

Onion principle and heat pad – perfect for the baby in winter

It sounds strange, but on the one hand there is a risk that babies will overheat in winter. It is therefore important to have the right clothing and equipment in the stroller. On the other hand, babies lose body heat quickly in the cold, especially through their heads. This can lead to hypothermia or even frostbite. Often the classic layered look is used, where the little ones are wrapped in underwear, tights, sweaters, cardigan, anorak or snowsuit and one or two blankets. This can quickly lead to the little ones breaking out in a sweat.

You can't go wrong with the layered look in winter. This means that the individual layers can be put on and taken off quickly as needed. As a rule of thumb, always dress your baby in one more layer than yourself. The best clothing for winter and sensitive baby skin is wool-silk or (organic) cotton. Both feel pleasantly soft on the skin without scratching, and keep you pleasantly warm without making the baby sweat.

If you want to offer your baby an additional warmth plus, try our Baby Warmer With this small heat pad, your baby will be comfortably warm in the stroller or carrier - whether as a body warmer on the chest and stomach or as a foot warmer for cold feet. To do this, simply insert one of the enclosed GRÜNSPECHT "Natural Hand Warmers" as a heat pad into the insert pocket of the fluffy, soft pillow cover. The pad then heats itself up within 15 minutes through contact with oxygen and offers pleasant warmth for up to 5 hours without cooling down.

The baby is taken care of – but how do you keep yourself warm in sub-zero temperatures?

Of course, we don't want to freeze when we're out and about in cold winter weather. Below we've put together some tips for you on how to not only dress your baby properly in winter, but also how to keep yourself warm.

Tip No. 1 – also applies to you: the onion look

Ultimately, the same principle applies to adults as to the little ones: layering with several layers. A warm upper body is very important. A thick sweater combined with a warm winter jacket is ideal here. You can wear additional layers under the sweater, for example several long-sleeved shirts. This means that body heat does not escape to the outside as quickly. Tights or long underwear are not a bad idea to keep your legs warm. A hat protects your head from getting cold. Wool, leather or synthetic gloves also keep your hands nice and warm. It is helpful to pull the sleeves of your jacket and sweater down as far as possible to prevent cold air from getting between your gloves and your clothes. Waterproof boots with insulating material also keep your feet nice and warm.

Tip No. 2 – keep moving

You won't get cold as quickly if you don't stay in one place in the cold, but keep your body moving. This will ensure good blood circulation to your body parts and your muscles won't cool down.

Tip No. 3 – Warmth from within

Warm drinks are a real treat in cold temperatures. Don't we all love the delicious punch or mulled wine at the Christmas market? There are great thermos cups to keep tea or another warm drink warm while you go for a walk. These are well insulated so that they can really keep the heat for several hours.

Tip No. 4 – Heat from outside

Nowadays, there are many different ways to have a source of heat with you when you're out and about. Body warmers are ideal for this. They come in a variety of shapes, which we'd like to introduce to you briefly below. They're ideal for winter walks and keep you warm from hand to toe.

The body warmers

We at GRÜNSPECHT Naturprodukte have set ourselves the goal of offering natural problem solvers and have therefore found a natural alternative to reduce the waste generated by disposable body warmers.

So please discover our natural body warmer with compostable filling*. They can be disposed of easily and in an environmentally friendly way after use. Instead of the sodium chloride salt contained in many disposable body warmers, the GRÜNSPECHT body warmers contain potassium chloride, which is also used in plant fertilizers. Potassium serves as a plant nutrient, which is why the filling can be disposed of in organic waste or compost after use and cooling down (based on a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, 2019 - please note the further information in the enclosed instructions for use).

The classic among body warmers, the You're probably all familiar with heat patches . They're practical for when you're out and about, as they can be applied discreetly under or on top of clothing and don't add bulk. They're attached to the body with an adhesive layer or can be carried in a jacket pocket as hand warmers. They activate themselves when they come into contact with oxygen and, depending on the product, provide soothing warmth for several hours. The way they work is usually based on a chemical reaction, namely rusting. After the packaging is opened, oxygen gets to the iron powder, which begins to oxidize and develops soothing warmth after around 15 minutes. However, all single-use body warmers have one thing in common: They are single-use products that must be disposed of after use!

Our Natural heat patches are used for practical and everyday heat application on the stomach, back or neck. With pleasant warmth and relaxation for up to 12 hours - ideal for on the go. Self-adhesive to close-fitting textiles without skin contact, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

For the feet, our Natural foot warmers . They are self-adhesive on the socks, thin, comfortable and ensure warm feet.

Our Natural hand warmer is a small, pleasantly soft and flexible warmer in the handy size of 7 × 10 cm and fits in any jacket or trouser pocket. If your fingers are cold, simply pull the hand warmer out of your jacket pocket and use it to warm your fingers up again.

Our heat pad is also ideal for applying heat to the wrists when you feel cold or have cold hands. Natural wrist warmers The organic wrist warmers ensure that the hand warmers are securely attached to the wrist. Our tip: fans of our wrist warmers have also reported using them for landscape photography or when working/playing on the computer - whenever you want to keep your fingers free and gloves are more of a hindrance.

And what should not be missing on a walk with a stroller in winter? The well-known Stroller muff ! We have further developed this popular product and equipped it with additional pockets on the inside. Two of the enclosed GRÜNSPECHT "natural hand warmers" can be inserted into these pockets as self-heating heat pads. The heat pads are securely fixed in the insert pockets and then heat themselves within 15 minutes through contact with oxygen. Their heat is distributed comfortably on the inside of the stroller muff, keeping your hands warm for up to 5 hours. The muff is universally suitable and is securely attached to the stroller handle with button fasteners - without any Velcro fasteners that could stick to your clothing. The outside is water-repellent and will keep you dry through the odd rain shower.
